چکیده

New GPS estimates of relative motion across the Jura Mountain Belt with respect to the Eurasian Plate indicate less than 1 mm/ yr of convergence, considerably less than previous estimates. Velocity uncertainties have been evaluated by several methods and range from 0.2 to 0.5 mm/yr for the semi-permanent stations. The major, statistically-significant strain feature inferred by the Jura GPS measurements is along-arc extension, compatible with tectonic studies. That the detected deformation is small in magnitude highlights two important issues: previous estimates are over-stated and that the approach of using semi-permanent GPS installations is capable of detecting small tectonic signals. Using the upper bound as the rate of convergence, we estimate that this would generate an earthquake of magnitude 5–5.5 every 15 to 75 yr. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Iranian Permanent GPS Network Receivers Differential Code Biases Estimation Using Global Ionospheric Maps

Measurements of the dual frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers can be used to calculate the electron density and the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere layer of the Earth atmosphere. TEC is a key parameter for investigating the ongoing spatial and temporal physical process of the ionosphere. For accurate estimation of TEC from GPS measurements, GPS satellites and GPS r...

A taxonomic review of the Late Jurassic eucryptodiran turtles from the Jura Mountains (Switzerland and France)

Background. Eucryptodiran turtles from the Late Jurassic (mainly Kimmeridgian) deposits of the Jura Mountains (Switzerland and France) are among the earliest named species traditionally referred to the Plesiochelyidae, Thalassemydidae, and Eurysternidae. As such, they are a reference for the study of Late Jurassic eucryptodires at the European scale. Fifteen species and four genera have been ty...

Distribution of present‐day vertical deformation across the Southern Alps, New Zealand, from 10 years of GPS data

[1] We use ten years of GPS data from nine continuous and six semi‐continuous GPS stations in a transect across the Southern Alps to measure rates of relative vertical movement with typical 1s uncertainties of 0.3–0.5 mm/yr. The estimated vertical rates define a fairly smooth profile across the range, with the highest rates of ∼5 mm/yr found near the crest of the mountains and ∼20–30 km southea...

What drives short‐ and long‐term crustal deformation in the southwestern United States?

[1] The driving forces for crustal deformation are often inferred from the crustal kinematics. In the Southwestern United States, however, crustal kinematics delineated by the Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements differs significantly from that reconstructed from the geological records. This discrepancy is likely due to the different timescales reflected in these datasets. Here we explo...

The rediscovery and redescription of the holotype of the Late Jurassic turtle Plesiochelys etalloni

Plesiochelyidae are a major component of Late Jurassic shallow marine environments throughout Europe. However, the taxonomy of plesiochelyid turtles is rather confused. Over the years, many taxa have been synonymized with Plesiochelys etalloni, one of the first described species. However, the holotype of P. etalloni (and only specimen known from Lect, the type locality) was lost for more than 1...
